The rebuilt locomotives remained in regular service until the early 1960s, when the British Railways transition to diesel and electric traction accelerated their withdrawal. The final member of the rebuilt class, No. 6106 Royal Scot, was withdrawn in December 1964.

Preservation

Two rebuilt Royal Scot locomotives have been preserved:

  1. No. 6101 Royal Scot – Preserved by the LMS Society; currently operational on heritage railway mainlines after extensive overhaul (completed 2022).
  2. No. 6108 Birmingham (originally No. 6135) – Stored in a static condition at the Midland Railway Centre; under consideration for future restoration.
