L. V. Prasad (1908 – 1994) was an Indian film producer, director, actor, and entrepreneur who made significant contributions to the South Indian and Hindi cinema industries. He is also noted for establishing several business ventures, including the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute.
Overview
Born Laxmi Narayan Vaidyanathan in Nellore, Madras Presidency (now Andhra Pradesh), Prasad began his career as a laboratory assistant at the East India Film Company in 1931. He quickly progressed to acting, appearing in films such as Sati Sulochana (1934). Transitioning to direction, Prasad directed notable films including Grihalakshmi (1934) and Manoos (1939). In 1956, he founded Prasad Studios, which expanded into a comprehensive film production and post‑production facility, later known as Prasad Group. The studio became a central hub for both Malayalam and Hindi film productions.
Prasad's contributions extended beyond cinema. In 1987, he founded the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad, which has grown into a premier ophthalmic institution offering clinical services, research, and education. He also established the Prasad Film Laboratories, providing processing and printing services for motion picture film.
Throughout his career, Prasad received numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan (1972) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1982), India's highest honor in cinema.
