Løten Station

Definition
Løten Station (Norwegian: Løten stasjon) is a railway station situated in the municipality of Løten in Innlandet county, Norway. It serves the Røros Line, connecting the towns of Hamar and Røros.

Overview
The station was inaugurated in 1862 as part of the original Hamar–Røros railway corridor, which later became known as the Røros Line (Rørosbanen). It is located approximately 150 km north‑west of Oslo and 12 km south of the municipal centre of Løten. The station is owned by the state-owned infrastructure company Bane NOR and is served by passenger trains operated by Vy, Norway’s primary passenger railway operator. Services typically consist of regional trains that run between Oslo, Hamar, and Røros, with several daily departures in each direction.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Løten” derives from the Old Norse Lótn or Løtn, which is believed to be related to the verb løta meaning “to allow” or “to permit.” The suffix “Station” follows the standard English term for a railway stop and is commonly used in Norwegian railway nomenclature alongside the Norwegian word stasjon.

Characteristics

  • Location: Coordinates 60°53′N 11°16′E; situated at an elevation of roughly 260 m above sea level.
  • Facilities: The station building is a historic wooden structure typical of mid‑19th‑century Norwegian railway architecture. It houses a waiting area and ticket vending machines but is unstaffed.
  • Platforms: Two side platforms serve the double‑track section of the line, permitting trains to pass in opposite directions.
  • Accessibility: The station provides step‑free access to both platforms via ramps, complying with national accessibility standards.
  • Services: Vy’s R14 (Oslo–Røros) service calls at Løten, offering connections to larger urban centres. There is no dedicated freight handling at the station.
  • Ownership and Management: Infrastructure is managed by Bane NOR, while operational responsibilities, including train scheduling and ticketing, lie with Vy.
