Lê Dung (full name: Đoàn Lê Dung; 5 June 1951 – 29 January 2001) was a Vietnamese soprano opera singer and one of the most renowned classical vocalists in Vietnam. She was a student at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and toured and performed widely in Eastern Europe.
Early Life and Education Lê Dung was born on 5 June 1951 in Hòn Gai, Quảng Ninh Province, into a modest family. She showed an early aptitude for singing and pursued formal training in classical vocal performance, eventually studying at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory (now the Moscow Conservatory) in Russia.
Career She was a member of the Hanoi Opera but also sang and recorded popular works by composers such as Phú Quang and other songwriters, bridging classical opera and Vietnamese popular music. She won international prizes at competitions in Sofia, Bulgaria (1987), Toulouse, France (1988), and Pyongyang, North Korea.
In 1993, she was awarded the title of People's Artist (NSND – Nghệ sĩ Nhân dân), Vietnam's highest artistic honor for a living artist, second only to the often posthumous Ho Chi Minh Prize. At the time, she was the youngest person ever to receive this accolade.
Teaching and Legacy Beyond performing, Lê Dung was a vocal instructor who trained several generations of Vietnamese singers, including notable artists such as People's Artist Tạ Minh Tâm and Ngọc Anh. She is widely regarded as a pioneer of classical opera in Vietnam and a leading voice in the genres of "nhạc đỏ" (red music/revolutionary music) and "nhạc tiền chiến" (pre-war music).
Death Lê Dung died suddenly on 29 January 2001 in Hanoi at the age of 49 (some sources report age 45 or 50), following a stroke or brain hemorrhage. She had just returned from a three-week tour of the Czech Republic and Poland. Her funeral drew a large crowd of mourners in Hanoi.
