Léopold Henri Amyot, CVO, FRHSC (Hon), is a former Canadian diplomat and civil servant. During his diplomatic career, he served as the Canadian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Morocco.
Diplomatic career
Amyot served as Canada's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Iraq from 10 June 1974 to 1977, and concurrently to Jordan from 10 June 1974 to 31 May 1977. He also served as Ambassador to Lebanon and as the fourth Canadian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Syria, holding both positions from 10 June 1974 to 7 January 1976. He later served as Canadian Ambassador to Morocco from 13 October 1983 to 1985.
Secretary to the Governor General
From 1988 to 1990, Amyot served as Secretary to the Governor General of Canada and Herald Chancellor of Canada, during the tenure of Governor General Jeanne Sauvé. He succeeded Esmond Unwin Butler in this role and was succeeded by Judith A. LaRocque.
Honours and heraldry
Amyot was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 1990. In 1989, he was made an Honourary Fellow of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada (FRHSC). His coat of arms was granted by the Canadian Heraldic Authority on 28 March 1989, and a confirmation of arms was issued on 15 December 2010. The arms feature a demi-lion rampant bearing the Baton of Office of the Herald Chancellor, along with symbols reflecting his diplomatic service, including stars representing Iraq, Morocco, Syria, and Jordan, and a cedar of Lebanon. His motto is Labor Fidentia (Latin for "Work, Self-Confidence").
