Kyle O'Quinn (born August 30, 1990) is an American professional basketball player who has competed in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and international leagues. He primarily plays the center position.
Early life and education
O'Quinn was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Queens. He attended Thomas A. Edison High School in Queens, where he was a standout basketball player. After high school, he played a postgraduate season at South Kent School in Connecticut to improve his academic standing and attract college attention.
College career
O'Quinn enrolled at the University of Norfolk State (Norfolk State University), a historically Black university in Virginia. As a member of the Norfolk State Spartans men's basketball team, he earned multiple honors, including three consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Defensive Player of the Year awards (2010–2012) and a place on the All-MEAC First Team. He helped the Spartans win the MEAC tournament in 2012, securing the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Professional career
- NBA Draft: O'Quinn went undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft. He subsequently played for the Miami Heat's Summer League team and later signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Charlotte Bobcats (later the Charlotte Hornets) but was waived before the regular season.
- NBA Development League (now G League): He spent the 2012–2013 season with the Erie BayHawks, the affiliate of the Orlando Magic.
- Indiana Pacers (2013–2015): O'Quinn signed a two-year contract with the Pacers in July 2013. He appeared in 70 games over two seasons, providing rebounding and interior defense off the bench.
- Philadelphia 76ers (2015–2016): In July 2015, O'Quinn signed with the 76ers, where he recorded a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds in a game against the Detroit Pistons on March 11, 2016.
- Houston Rockets (2016–2017): O'Quinn joined the Rockets in July 2016, serving primarily as a reserve center.
- Orlando Magic (2017): He signed a 10-day contract with the Magic in March 2017, later converting it to a multi-year deal before being waived in July 2017.
- Boston Celtics (2017–2018): O'Quinn signed a two-way contract, splitting time between the Celtics and their G League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. He was waived in February 2018.
