Kwabena Duffuor

Definition
Kwabena Duffuor is a Ghanaian banker, economist, and public servant who served as the Minister of Finance of Ghana from 2009 to 2012. He is also the founder and former chairman of UniBank Ghana Limited.

Overview
Born on 26 February 1959 in Ghana, Duffuor pursued higher education in economics and finance, obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Ghana and a Master of Science in Banking and Finance from the University of West London. He began his professional career at the Bank of Ghana, where he rose to the position of Deputy Governor. In 1999, he was appointed Managing Director of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), during which time the bank experienced significant growth.

In January 2009, Duffuor was appointed Minister of Finance and Economic Planning by President John Atta Mills. His tenure was marked by efforts to stabilize Ghana’s macroeconomic environment, manage public debt, and implement fiscal reforms. He resigned from the ministerial post in January 2012 and returned to the private sector.

Following his public service, Duffuor founded UniBank Ghana Limited in 1997, serving as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. UniBank grew to become one of Ghana’s notable commercial banks before encountering liquidity challenges that led to its revocation of licence by the Bank of Ghana in 2018. Duffuor has also been involved in various philanthropic activities, including the Kwabena Duffuor Foundation, which focuses on education and health initiatives.
