History
Kumaun University was established on December 1, 1973, under the [[Uttar Pradesh Universities Act]] of 1973. It was formed alongside Garhwal University (now Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University) to cater to the higher education needs of the then newly formed hilly regions of Uttar Pradesh. Prior to its establishment, the region relied on universities located in the plains. The university was conceived to promote research and education relevant to the unique geographical and cultural context of the Kumaon Himalayas.
