The KuMoHa 12 is a class of electric multiple unit (EMU) railcars formerly operated by the Japanese National Railways (JNR). These vehicles were primarily 17-meter-long, double-ended motor cars used for passenger service on short-distance branch lines and in depot switching operations.
Etymology and Classification
The designation "KuMoHa" follows the standard JNR classification system:
- Ku (ク): Indicates a driving cab (control car).
- Mo (モ): Indicates a motor car (powered vehicle).
- Ha (ハ): Indicates ordinary class (formerly third class) seating.
The number 12 identifies the specific series, which was largely composed of older 17-meter steel-bodied cars that were modified or rebuilt for single-car operation.
History and Development
The KuMoHa 12 series did not originate as a single production run but was primarily created through the modification of existing rolling stock. Most units were converted from the JNR 30, 31, 33, and 50 series, which were originally built between the late 1920s and early 1940s.
Following World War II, JNR required versatile, single-car units to service low-traffic branch lines where multi-car trainsets were not economically viable. Between 1950 and 1959, several older carriages were fitted with driving cabs at both ends to allow for bidirectional operation without the need for a separate trailer car or locomotive.
Technical Specifications
- Length: Approximately 17 meters.
- Body Construction: Riveted or welded steel.
- Configuration: Double-ended (cabs at both ends) with a single motor bogie setup.
- Seating: Generally featured longitudinal seating to maximize standing room for commuters.
- Power System: 1,500V DC overhead catenary.
Operational Use
The KuMoHa 12 was most notably associated with the Tsurumi Line (specifically the Okutama branch to Ōkawa Station) and the Iida Line. Due to their short length and ability to navigate tight curves, they remained in service on specific industrial branch lines long after more modern 20-meter stock had become the standard elsewhere in Japan.
Retirement and Preservation
The majority of the KuMoHa 12 fleet was retired in the 1980s and 1990s as the aging wooden-framed or early steel components became difficult to maintain and were replaced by more modern rolling stock like the 103 series or 205 series.
A notable example, unit KuMoHa 12052, was maintained by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) for special event services on the Tsurumi Line until 1996. Several units have been preserved, including KuMoHa 12052 at the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park in Nagoya and KuMoHa 12001 at the Tokyo General Rolling Stock Center.
