Krishnam Raju

Krishnam Raju (born Krishnam Raju; 20 July 1940 – 9 September 2022) was an Indian actor and politician who worked primarily in Telugu cinema. He was popularly known as the “Rebel Star” for his portrayals of defiant and heroic characters. Raju also served as a Member of Parliament and held ministerial positions in the Government of India.

Early life and education
Krishnam Raju was born in Vellatur, Madras Presidency (present‑day Andhra Pradesh), India. He completed his early education in his hometown before moving to Madras (now Chennai) to pursue a career in acting.

Film career
Raju made his acting debut with the film Chalo Chiranjeevi (1961). He gained prominence in the 1970s with lead roles in films such as Badi Panthulu (1972), Mana Voori Pandavulu (1978), and Jwala (1979). Known for his distinctive baritone voice and muscular physique, he became a leading star in Telugu cinema, appearing in over 180 films across multiple genres, including action, drama, and mythological epics. Notable later works include Simhasanam (1986), Trinetrudu (1988), and Karthavyam (1990). He received the Nandi Award for Best Actor for his performance in Manchi Donga (1983) and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (South) in 2015.

Political career
Krishnam Raju entered politics in the 1990s, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was elected to the Lok Sabha, representing the Kakinada constituency, in the 1999 general election. He served as Minister of State for External Affairs in the Vajpayee administration from 1999 to 2000 and later as Minister of State for Rural Development until 2004. He was re‑elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 and served until 2009. Raju was known for advocating the interests of the Telugu-speaking population and for his involvement in cultural and social initiatives.

Personal life
Krishnam Raju was married to Kasthuri Devi, and the couple had three children. He was a practising Hindu and was involved in several charitable activities, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare.

Death
Krishnam Raju died on 9 September 2022 at the age of 82 in a private hospital in Hyderabad, Telangana, following complications from a prolonged illness. His death prompted tributes from political leaders, fellow actors, and the public, acknowledging his contributions to Indian cinema and public service.
