Koudekerk aan den Rijn is a town and former municipality in the province of South Holland, the Netherlands. Situated on the eastern bank of the Oude Rijn river, it lies approximately 15 kilometres (9 mi) north of the city of Leiden. Since 1 January 2006, Koudekerk aan den Rijn has been incorporated into the municipality of Leiden following a municipal reorganization.
Geography
Koudekerk aan den Rijn occupies an area of about 6.3 km² (2.43 sq mi), of which roughly 0.3 km² (0.12 sq mi) is water. The town is located in the historic region known as the Rijnland, characterized by low-lying polders and a network of canals that support agriculture and horticulture.
History
The settlement is first documented in the 13th century under the name “Coldinc”, referring to its location near a cold waterway. The “aan den Rijn” suffix distinguishes it from other Dutch localities named Koudekerk. Throughout the Middle Ages, the community developed around a church dedicated to Saint Peter, which dates from the 15th century and remains a central historic building. Koudekerk aan den Rijn was an independent municipality until its merger with the neighboring municipality of Sassenheim and others to form the enlarged municipality of Leiden in 2006.

As of the 2023 municipal statistics, Koudekerk aan den Rijn has an estimated population of about 9,500 inhabitants. The population density is roughly 1,500 inhabitants per km². The town’s residents are predominantly Dutch, with a small proportion of foreign nationals, reflecting national demographic trends.

The local economy is largely based on small‑scale trade, services, and agriculture, particularly greenhouse horticulture, which is common in the surrounding Rijnland area. The town is served by the Koudekerk aan den Rijn railway station on the Amsterdam–Rotterdam railway line, providing regular train connections to major Dutch cities. Road access is facilitated by the A44 motorway, which lies to the south of the town.

Koudekerk aan den Rijn hosts several primary schools, while secondary education is generally obtained in nearby larger towns such as Leiden and Sassenheim. Cultural life includes an annual carnival, local sports clubs (football, field hockey, and rowing), and community events held in the historic town hall and the St. Peter’s Church.
