Kosjerić is a town and municipality situated in western Serbia. Administratively, it belongs to the Zlatibor District. The municipality covers an area of approximately 319 km² (123 sq mi) and, according to the 2011 census, has a population of 12,090 inhabitants, of which 4,949 reside in the urban settlement of Kosjerić.
Geography
Kosjerić lies at an altitude of about 400 m (1,312 ft) above sea level in the valley of the river Piva, a tributary of the Drina. The surrounding terrain is characterized by a mixture of low hills and forested areas, transitioning toward the mountainous zones of the Zlatibor region. The climate is classified as humid continental, with warm summers and cold winters.
History
The area of present‑day Kosjerić has been inhabited since antiquity, as evidenced by archaeological finds from the Roman period. During the medieval era, the settlement was part of the Serbian Kingdom and later the Serbian Empire. Under Ottoman rule from the 15th century until the 19th century, the locality functioned as a modest market village. Following the Serbian uprisings and the subsequent establishment of the modern Serbian state, Kosjerić developed gradually, receiving municipal status in the early 20th century.
Economy
The local economy is traditionally based on forestry, wood processing, and agriculture. Timber and furniture manufacturing constitute a significant portion of industrial activity. Agricultural production includes cereal grains, fruit orchards, and livestock breeding. In recent decades, tourism has grown, leveraging the proximity of the Zlatibor mountain resort and the natural attractions of the surrounding forests and rivers.
Infrastructure and Transport
Kosjerić is served by the Belgrade–Bar railway line, with a station providing passenger and freight connections to major Serbian cities and the Adriatic coast. The municipality is linked to the regional road network via State Road 21, which facilitates road traffic to neighboring towns such as Užice and Čajetina. Public utilities, including water supply, electricity, and telecommunications, are administered by the municipal authorities.
Education and Culture
The town hosts primary and secondary schools, including a vocational school focused on wood technology and agriculture. Cultural institutions comprise a community cultural centre (Dom kulture) that organizes local festivals, exhibitions, and performances. Traditional folklore and customs are preserved through annual events celebrating regional heritage.
Demographics
According to the 2011 census, the ethnic composition of the municipality is predominantly Serbian (approximately 96 %), with small minorities of Roma, Bosniaks, and other groups. The majority of residents identify with the Serbian Orthodox Church.

- Vasa Čarapić (1768–1806), a historic figure associated with the First Serbian Uprising, was born in the vicinity of Kosjerić.
