Korhogo Department is an administrative subdivision of Côte d’Ivoire, situated in the Poro Region of the Savanes District. It is one of the several departments that constitute the third tier of the country’s territorial organization.
Geography
The department occupies the northern part of the country and encompasses an area of approximately 4,900 km². Its administrative seat is the city of Korhogo, which is also the regional capital of Poro.
Administrative Structure
Following the 2011 territorial reform, departments function as third‑level divisions under districts and regions. Korhogo Department is overseen by a prefect appointed by the central government. The department is further divided into sub‑prefectures, the principal ones being:

- Sirasso
- Gbon
- Niamien
Each sub‑prefecture is administered by a sub‑prefect.
Demographics
According to the 2021 national census, Korhogo Department had a population of approximately 660 000 inhabitants. The population is ethnically diverse, with the Senoufo (Senufo) people forming a significant proportion, alongside other groups such as the Malinke and Dioula.
Economy
The local economy is predominantly agrarian. Major agricultural activities include the cultivation of cotton, cashew nuts, and various staple crops (maize, millet, and sorghum). Livestock rearing and small‑scale commerce also contribute to the department’s economic profile.
History
- 1969: Korhogo Department was created as a first‑level administrative unit during a nationwide reorganization that replaced the former “Nord Department.”
- 1997: Introduction of regions as a new administrative tier; Korhogo Department became part of the newly formed Savanes Region.
- 2000: The Poro Region was established, and Korhogo Department was incorporated within it.
- 2011: A further decentralization reform redefined districts as the highest tier, regions as second‑level, and departments (including Korhogo) as third‑level subdivisions.
Infrastructure
The department is served by the Korhogo Airport, which provides limited domestic air service. Road networks connect Korhogo with major cities such as Bouaké and the regional capital of Daloa. Educational institutions include several secondary schools and a branch of the University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny.
Governance
The department operates under the legal framework of the Ivorian decentralization statutes. The prefect coordinates with regional and district authorities on matters of security, development planning, and public administration.
