Konstantin Malofeev

Konstantin Yuryevich Malofeev (Russian: Константин Юрьевич Малофеев; born 27 July 1974) is a Russian businessman, philanthropist, and media entrepreneur. He is the founder and owner of the publishing house Tsargrad Media, which produces the newspaper Tsargrad (formerly Tsargrad), and the Russian Orthodox‑oriented think tank and charitable foundation known as the Malofeev Foundation. Malofeev is noted for his support of the Russian Orthodox Church and for his involvement in media projects that promote a traditionalist and nationalist perspective within Russia.

Early life and education
Malofeev was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Soviet Union. He studied at Saint Petersburg State University, graduating with a degree in economics. He later pursued graduate studies at the Higher School of Economics.

Business career
In the early 2000s, Malofeev entered the real estate sector, acquiring several commercial and residential properties in Moscow. He subsequently diversified his interests into publishing and media. In 2009, he launched Tsargrad newspaper, a weekly publication that emphasizes Russian history, Orthodox Christianity, and conservative cultural values. The newspaper later expanded into a broader media group, Tsargrad Media, which includes digital platforms and television projects.

Malofeev also founded the Malofeev Foundation, which finances projects related to the Russian Orthodox Church, Russian cultural heritage, and educational initiatives. The foundation has supported the construction and restoration of churches, the publication of religious texts, and academic scholarships.

Political activity and sanctions
Malofeev has been identified by various Western governments as a figure who provides financial support to entities aligned with the Russian state. In 2014, the United States Department of the Treasury added him to the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list, citing his role in supporting the Russian government's policies in Ukraine. The European Union and the United Kingdom subsequently imposed similar sanctions, restricting his access to financial systems and freezing assets within those jurisdictions.

The sanctions have been justified by authorities on the grounds that Malofeev is involved in “providing material support to the Russian government and extremist groups” and for “contributing to the destabilisation of Ukraine.” Malofeev and his representatives have denied wrongdoing, stating that his activities are focused on cultural and religious philanthropy.

Philanthropy and cultural initiatives
Through the Malofeev Foundation, he has funded the construction of several Russian Orthodox churches in Russia and abroad, including projects in the United States, Israel, and Serbia. The foundation also sponsors the publication of Orthodox theological works and the organization of conferences on Russian cultural identity.

Personal life
Malofeev is married and has children. He maintains a low public profile, with most public appearances occurring in the context of his media and philanthropic ventures.

Legal status
As of the latest publicly available information (2023), Malofeev remains subject to sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and several other jurisdictions. These measures limit his ability to travel internationally and to conduct financial transactions with entities in sanctioning countries. Accurate information regarding any changes to his legal status after that date is not confirmed.
