Konsmo Church
History
The earliest existing historical records of a church on this site date back to the year 1349. This original church was likely a medieval stave church or an earlier wooden church. This medieval building was eventually replaced by a new wooden church in 1640. After about 160 years of use, that church was torn down, and the present church was constructed in 1802. The new church was consecrated on 15 August 1802 by Bishop Jens Bloch. Konsmo Church has undergone several renovations and restorations over its history, ensuring its preservation while maintaining its historical character.
Architecture and Features
Konsmo Church is a long church design, a prevalent architectural style for Norwegian churches of its period. It is constructed entirely of wood and features a painted white exterior, a common characteristic of many rural churches in Norway. The architectural style reflects the prevailing tastes of the early 19th century, exhibiting elements of the Empire style. The interior is characterized by its simplicity and functionality, with a traditional layout including a nave, chancel, and altar. Key features include a historic pulpit, an altar piece, and an organ. The church is surrounded by a traditional churchyard that serves as a burial ground.
