Konditor (formerly "Konditor & Cook") is a made-to-order cake bakery based in the United Kingdom, specialising in personalised celebration cakes. The word "Konditor" is the German term for confectioner or pastry chef.
Overview
The company was founded in 1993 by Gerhard Jenne as "Konditor & Cook" and rebranded to "Konditor" in 2018. Its first shop is located at 22 Cornwall Road, London SE1 8TW on the South Bank, with additional branches near Chancery Lane and Mansion House, as well as a nationwide delivery service.
History
Gerhard Jenne, the founder, was born in Freiburg, Germany, and trained as a baker and pastry chef in Munich. He moved to the UK in 1982, initially working at the Swiss Centre in Leicester Square, London. From 1983 to 1993, he worked at the Hygienic Bakery and food shops of Justin de Blank and business partner Robert Troop in Knightsbridge and Belgravia.
In 1993, Jenne took over the Queen of Hearts cake shop in Waterloo, which became the flagship store for Konditor. At the time, Waterloo was not known for retail or food shops; Jenne is credited with helping put both Konditor and the Waterloo area on the culinary map. He also ensured that all staff received high-quality training and mentoring due to a shortage of qualified pastry chefs.
Products
Konditor produces a range of baked goods including:
- Chocolate brownies
- Chocolate/vanilla Curly Whirly cake
