Kocherinovo Municipality

Kocherinovo Municipality (Bulgarian: Община Кочериново) is an administrative territorial unit (obshtina) of Kyustendil Province in southwestern Bulgaria. Its administrative centre is the town of Kocherinovo, which lies on the left bank of the Struma River near the foothills of the Rila and Pirin mountains.

Geography
The municipality is situated in the Struma River valley, a region characterized by a temperate continental climate and fertile agricultural lands. It borders the municipalities of Kyustendil to the north, Dupnitsa to the east, and Bobov Dol to the south. The terrain includes low hills and riverine plains, providing suitable conditions for crop cultivation and livestock farming.

Administrative structure
Kocherinovo Municipality consists of the town of Kocherinovo and a number of surrounding villages. The exact number of villages varies in official sources; they are administratively subordinated to the municipal council, which is elected every four years.

Demographics
According to the 2011 census conducted by the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria, the municipality had a total population of approximately 9,000 inhabitants. The population is predominantly ethnic Bulgarian, with minorities of Roma and other groups. Population trends over recent decades have shown a gradual decline, reflecting broader patterns of rural depopulation in the region.

Economy
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with cultivation of cereals, vegetables, and orchards, as well as animal husbandry. Small‑scale manufacturing and services linked to the town’s role as an administrative centre also contribute to employment. The proximity to the Struma River facilitates irrigation and supports the agricultural sector.

Infrastructure and transport
Kocherinovo is located near the European route E79 (the road linking Sofia with the Greek border) and is served by the Sofia–Kulata railway line, providing both passenger and freight connections. Public utilities, educational institutions (including primary schools), and health care facilities are administered at the municipal level.

History
The area that now forms Kocherinovo Municipality has been inhabited since antiquity, with archaeological evidence of Thracian and Roman presence. The modern administrative unit was established in its current form following the administrative reforms of the late 20th century that reorganized Bulgaria’s municipal structures.

Governance
The municipality is governed by a mayor and a municipal council, both elected by local residents. The council is responsible for local budgeting, development planning, and the provision of public services within its jurisdiction.
