Kleinneuhausen

Definition
Kleinneuhausen is a municipality (Gemeinde) in the district of Sömmerda, located in the federal state of Thuringia (Thüringen), Germany.

Overview
Kleinneuhausen lies in the central part of Thuringia, approximately 15 kilometres west of the district capital Sömmerda and about 90 kilometres north‑west of Erfurt, the state capital. The municipality is part of the collective municipality (Verwaltungsgemeinschaft) of Kölleda. As of the most recent statistical release (2023), Kleinneuhausen has a population of roughly 600 inhabitants and covers an area of 7.04 km². The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, small‑scale industry, and commuting to nearby larger towns. The community is served by regional road L1993 and lies near the A71 Autobahn, providing road connections to the broader region.

Historically, the settlement was first documented in the 14th century as part of the lands belonging to the Electorate of Saxony. Over the centuries, the area experienced typical regional developments, including the Reformation, the Thirty Years' War, and later incorporation into the Kingdom of Prussia after the Congress of Vienna (1815). Following World War II, Kleinneuhausen became part of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and was administratively assigned to the Bezirk Erfurt. After German reunification in 1990, it has been administered within the modern state of Thuringia.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Kleinneuhausen” is composed of two German words: klein (meaning “small”) and Neuhausen (meaning “new houses” or “new settlement”). The prefix “Klein‑” distinguishes it from the nearby larger municipality of Neuhausen (today part of the town Kölleda). The suffix ‑hausen is a common element in German place names derived from Old High German husen (houses), indicating a settlement.
