Definition
Kitchener—Wilmot was a federal electoral district (riding) in the province of Ontario, Canada, represented in the House of Commons of Canada from the 1968 federal election until its abolition in the 1976 redistribution, which took effect for the 1979 election.
Overview
The riding was created in 1966 from portions of the former Waterloo North and other adjacent districts as part of a nationwide redistribution aimed at reflecting population changes captured in the 1961 census. It comprised the city of Kitchener (or parts thereof) and the surrounding rural area known as Wilmot Township. The district participated in three federal elections (1968, 1972, and 1974). In the 1976 electoral redistribution, Kitchener—Wilmot was dissolved, and its territory was divided among the newly defined ridings of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Oxford.
Etymology / Origin
The name combines two geographic entities:
- Kitchener – the principal urban centre within the riding, originally named Berlin before being renamed Kitchener in 1916 after British Field Marshal Lord Kitchener.
- Wilmot – referring to Wilmot Township, a historic township in Waterloo Region named after the English politician Sir Robert Wilmot, 1st Baronet.
