Definition
Kirushya is an administrative ward (also referred to as a division) in Ngara District, located within the Kagera Region of north‑western Tanzania.
Overview
Situated at approximately 2°27′02″S 30°32′34″E, Kirushya lies close to Tanzania’s borders with Burundi and Rwanda. According to the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics, the ward’s population was 12,062 in 2016, an increase from 10,628 recorded in the 2012 census. The ward forms one of the 17 subdivisions of Ngara District and comprises 23 villages, including Mubisumulizi, Murubila, Kumuyaga, and Kasange, among others. The local economy is primarily agrarian, with residents engaged in subsistence farming and small‑scale livestock keeping.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Kirushya” is derived from a local Kinyarwanda or Kirundi term meaning “tedious” or “burdensome.” This etymology reflects the ward’s historically dry, hilly terrain, which limited water availability and forced inhabitants to travel long distances for water and other supplies—a circumstance perceived as tedious by the early settlers.
Characteristics
- Geography: Kirushya occupies a dry, elevated plateau typical of the Kagera highlands. The area experiences a semi‑arid climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, contributing to periodic water scarcity.
- Demographics: The 2016 population estimate of 12,062 indicates a modestly growing community. The majority of residents belong to ethnic groups native to the Kagera Region, such as the Ha, Haya, and other Bantu‑speaking peoples.
- Infrastructure: As of the 2017 Ngara District Council Strategic Plan, only about 41 % of Kirushya’s households had access to clean water, highlighting ongoing challenges in water provision and sanitation. Basic road networks connect the ward’s villages, but many routes remain unpaved.
- Administration: The ward is governed by a Ward Executive Officer who coordinates local development projects, public services, and liaison with the district council.
