Definition
Kim Appleby (born 28 August 1961) is an English singer, songwriter, and actress best known as one half of the 1980s pop duo Mel & Kim and for her subsequent solo career.
Overview
Kim Appleby was born in London, England, and grew up in the Harrow area. She began her musical career alongside her younger sister, Melanie "Mel" Appleby, forming the pop duo Mel & Kim in 1985. The pair achieved rapid commercial success with a string of hit singles produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, including “Respectable” (UK No. 1, 1987) and “Showing Out (Get Fresh)” (UK No. 3, 1988). Their debut album, F.L.M., sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide.
Following Mel’s untimely death from cancer in January 1990, Kim pursued a solo career. Her debut solo album, Kim Appleby (1990), featured the self‑penned single “Don’t Worry,” which reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and earned her an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song. Subsequent releases included the albums Breakaway (1993) and The Best of Kim Appleby (1999). In addition to recording, Appleby has performed in musical theatre productions such as The Vagina Monologues and has appeared on television as a presenter and guest judge.
Appleby remains active in the music industry, participating in retro‑pop revival concerts and contributing songs to charitable compilations. She also engages in advocacy work for cancer research, reflecting her personal experience with her sister’s illness.
Etymology/Origin
The surname “Appleby” is of English locational origin, derived from several villages named Appleby in England (e.g., Appleby-in-Westmorland). The name combines the Old Norse personal name “Ábæl” with the Old English “by,” meaning “farm” or “settlement.” The given name “Kim” is a unisex name of English origin, originally a diminutive of “Kimberly” or “Kimball,” but it has become an independent given name.

- Musical style: Appleby’s work spans dance‑pop, synth‑pop, and contemporary adult pop. Her early recordings with Mel & Kim feature high‑energy production typical of late‑1980s Stock Aitken Waterman tracks, while her solo material incorporates more melodic ballads and introspective lyricism.
- Songwriting: Notably, Appleby co‑wrote many of her solo songs, including the award‑winning “Don’t Worry,” showcasing personal themes of resilience and optimism.
