Kilvelur taluk

Kilvelur taluk is an administrative subdivision located in the Nagapattinam district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It serves as one of the primary units of revenue administration and local governance within the district. The headquarters of the taluk is the town of Kilvelur (also spelled Keezhvelur).

The taluk is situated in the Cauvery Delta region, a geographical area characterized by fertile alluvial soil and a network of distributaries from the Cauvery River. Due to these geographical features, the economy of Kilvelur taluk is predominantly agrarian, with paddy (rice) being the principal crop cultivated in the region.

Administratively, Kilvelur taluk is managed by a Tahsildar, who is responsible for land records, revenue collection, and the coordination of government services at the local level. The taluk comprises numerous revenue villages and is part of the larger decentralised governance structure of the state.

According to the 2011 Census of India, Kilvelur taluk had a recorded population that reflects the rural-urban distribution typical of the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. The region is well-connected by state highways and the Southern Railway zone, with the Kilvelur railway station situated on the line connecting the major towns of Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur.

Cultural and religious heritage in the taluk is marked by several historic Hindu temples, which are central to the social and cultural life of the local population. The Akshayapureeswarar Temple in Kilvelur is one of the notable religious sites within the administrative boundaries of the taluk.
