Khan Pou Senchey

Khan Pou Senchey (Khmer: ខណ្ឌពោធិ៍សែនជ័យ, also transliterated as Khan Por Senchey, Khan Pursenchey, or Khan Pur Senchey) is an administrative district (khan) of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Located in the western part of the capital city, it is one of the larger districts by area and is characterized by a dynamic mix of residential, industrial, commercial, and agricultural land, undergoing rapid urbanization and development.

Geography and Administration

Pou Senchey district is situated in the western expanse of Phnom Penh. It shares borders with other Phnom Penh districts, including Sen Sok to the north, Meanchey and Dangkor to the east, and parts of Kandal Province to the south and west. The district is strategically important as it encompasses Phnom Penh International Airport (formerly Pochentong International Airport), the busiest and largest airport in Cambodia, serving as a key gateway to the country.

Administratively, Khan Pou Senchey is subdivided into several communes (sangkats), which are further divided into villages (phums). As of recent administrative adjustments in Phnom Penh, these typically include:

  • Chom Chao 1 (ចោមចៅទី១)
  • Chom Chao 2 (ចោមចៅទី២)
  • Chom Chao 3 (ចោមចៅទី៣)
  • Kakab 1 (កាកាបទី១)
  • Kakab 2 (កាកាបទី២)
  • Samraong Kraom (សំរោងក្រោម)

Economy and Development

Due to its prime location and significant infrastructure, particularly the international airport, Pou Senchey is a vital economic hub within Phnom Penh. The district hosts numerous factories, garment industries, and special economic zones, making it a key area for manufacturing and employment. In addition to industrial activity, there is a rapid expansion of residential developments, borey projects (gated communities), and commercial centers, catering to the growing urban population. The area's accessibility and its role as a transport node have attracted substantial investment in infrastructure and housing, significantly contributing to Phnom Penh's urban sprawl and economic growth.

History

Historically, much of the territory that now constitutes Pou Senchey district was rural, predominantly agricultural land, with significant portions previously belonging to Kandal Province. As Phnom Penh experienced rapid population growth and urban expansion throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the city's administrative boundaries were progressively extended to incorporate these surrounding areas. The current administrative division of Khan Pou Senchey was formally established as part of a major restructuring of Phnom Penh's districts in 2008, with further adjustments in subsequent years, aimed at more effectively managing the capital's accelerated growth and urban development. The name "Pou Senchey" itself has historical significance, often associated with a revered Bodhi (pou) tree or an area known for such trees.
