Khalié Brahim Djadarab

Khalié Brahim Djadarab (also known as Khalié Madeleine; born c. 1940) is a Chadian political activist, teacher, and former member of the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS).

Life

Djadarab was born in the early 1940s in Arada, Chad. She attended the town's first public school after it opened in 1953. In 1954, her father was transferred to Abéché, where she completed her primary studies. She did not have the opportunity to attend secondary school.

At age seventeen or eighteen, her marriage was arranged to her former teacher Rakis Moll, who persuaded her to become a teacher. Despite feeling unprepared, she established a girls' school in Abéché.

In 1966, she divorced Moll and married military officer Félix Malloum. They lived together for three years, though Malloum was frequently away on military or political campaigns. In 1975, Malloum seized power in a coup, but the marriage ended shortly thereafter. Malloum took custody of their son and remarried.

Djadarab returned to teaching. After teachers' salaries dropped in the late 1970s, she supplemented her income by opening a drinking establishment. She remained in Chad after Malloum fled to Nigeria in 1979.

Political career

After Idriss Déby overthrew the regime of Hissène Habré in 1990, Djadarab entered politics as a member of the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS). She became a strong supporter of Déby, recruiting women to join the party and serving as the leader of the MPS women's section in N'Djamena. However, she became disillusioned after observing that few women were actually offered leadership positions in Chad.

Personal life

Djadarab underwent female genital mutilation (FGM) as a youth, a practice she later opposed. She has one son from her marriage to Félix Malloum.
