Key Club (formally Key Club International) is a student-led, international community service organization for high school students (typically ages 14–18). It is the oldest and largest service program for high school students in the world, operating as a program of Kiwanis International.
History
The first Key Club was formed in 1925 at Sacramento High School in Sacramento, California, with 11 charter members. It was conceived by two Sacramento Kiwanis Club members, Albert C. Olney and Frank C. Vincent, who were also high school administrators. The club was originally composed of "key boys" in the school willing to serve and build school spirit. The Florida association formed in 1939, becoming the first Key Club district. In 1943, delegates to the first Key Club convention voted to form the International Association of Key Clubs, electing Malcolm Lewis as the first president. Key Club began admitting female students in 1977. In 1999, Key Club International membership topped 200,000 for the first time. Key Club celebrated its centennial in 2025.
Mission and Values
Key Club's mission is to provide its members with opportunities to perform service, build character, and develop leadership. Its core values are leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness. The organization's motto is "Caring — Our way of life."
Structure
Key Club International is a self-governing, student-led organization with a hierarchical structure:
- Club Level: Key Clubs are established in high schools or equivalent institutions. Elected officers typically include a president, one or more vice presidents, secretary, treasurer, editor, webmaster, and class directors.
- Division Level: Districts are divided into divisions, each led by a lieutenant governor.
- District Level: There are 33 organized districts and one district in formation, each led by a governor elected at the annual district convention.
- International Level: Key Club International is led by a student board of trustees comprising a president, vice president, and 11 trustees.
Membership and Reach
As of 2025, Key Club reported approximately 251,000 current student members across more than 5,000 clubs in over 40 countries. Membership is open to any student who desires to become a leader and provide service to others. Each member is expected to perform at least 50 hours of combined service annually to their home, school, and community.
Governance
Key Club operates under a set of bylaws at the international, district, and club levels. The Key Club International Board of Trustees sets the direction for the organization. The organization is funded by nominal dues paid by every member, which as of 2024 were set at US$10 per member annually.
Key Programs and Partnerships
Key Club partners with organizations including UNICEF USA. Notable initiatives include the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF fundraiser, the Start Strong: Zambia project supporting early childhood education, and the Global Leadership Certificate program. Key Club also offers the Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF), which provides grants of US$100 to US$2,000 for club service projects.
Notable Alumni
Former Key Club members include Craig Melvin (co-host of NBC's "Today"), former astronaut and U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, and Alexander "Sandy" Nininger Jr., the first World War II veteran to receive the Medal of Honor.
Affiliations
Key Club is part of the Kiwanis International family of Service Leadership Programs, which also includes K-Kids (elementary school), Builders Club (middle school), Circle K International (college/university), and Aktion Club (adults with disabilities).
