Keppel TatLee Bank

Keppel TatLee Bank was a commercial bank operating in Singapore from 1990 to 1999. It was formed through the merger of two pre‑existing financial institutions—Keppel Bank and Tat Lee Bank—and later became a subsidiary of the Oversea‑Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) after its acquisition in 1999.

History

Date Event
1990 Keppel Bank (established 1968 as a subsidiary of the Keppel Group) merged with Tat Lee Bank (founded in 1971) to create Keppel TatLee Bank. The merger was aimed at strengthening the combined entity’s capital base and expanding its product offerings in retail and corporate banking.
1990–1998 Keppel TatLee Bank operated as an independent commercial bank, providing services such as deposits, loans, trade financing, foreign exchange, and treasury operations to individuals, small‑ and medium‑sized enterprises, and large corporations.
1999 OCBC announced the acquisition of Keppel TatLee Bank for a cash consideration of approximately S$1.5 billion. The transaction was completed in August 1999, and Keppel TatLee Bank’s assets and liabilities were integrated into OCBC’s operations. The Keppel TatLee brand was subsequently retired.

Operations

  • Retail Banking: Offered savings and checking accounts, personal loans, credit cards, and mortgage financing.
  • Corporate Banking: Provided working‑capital financing, syndicated loans, trade services, and foreign‑exchange solutions.
  • Branch Network: Maintained a network of branches across Singapore, primarily located in commercial districts and residential areas.

Ownership and Corporate Structure

  • The merged entity was initially owned jointly by the Keppel Group and shareholders of Tat Lee Bank. Following the acquisition, OCBC became the sole owner, absorbing the bank’s operations into its own corporate structure.

Legacy

Keppel TatLee Bank’s integration into OCBC contributed to the latter’s emergence as one of Singapore’s “Big Three” banking groups. The merger and subsequent acquisition are frequently cited in discussions of consolidation trends within the Singapore banking sector during the 1990s.
