Kenny Otieno (born 21 June 1991) is a Kenyan‑Canadian former professional basketball player and current basketball coach. He is the head coach of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team.
Early life and education
Otieno was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and emigrated with his family to Canada, where he was raised in Edmonton and later Lethbridge, Alberta. He attended Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge. Otieno played university‑level basketball for the University of Alberta Golden Bears, redshirting two seasons and earning all‑conference honours during his collegiate career.
Playing career
After completing his university eligibility, Otieno played professionally in Canada. He spent time with the Saint John Riptide of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL‑Canada) and later joined the Edmonton Stingers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). His playing position was forward, and he was noted for his rebounding and defensive contributions.
Coaching career
Following his retirement from professional play, Otieno transitioned to coaching. He served as an assistant coach for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball program beginning in 2020. In March 2023, he was appointed the 14th head coach in the program’s history, becoming one of the few former professional players to lead a Canadian university basketball team. In addition to his university duties, Otieno operates KO Basketball, a training organization that provides skill development and coaching services.
Personal life
Otieno holds dual Kenyan and Canadian citizenship. He is active in community outreach, including participation in Black History Month events in the Lethbridge region.
