Definition
Kennedy station is a major transit hub located in the Scarborough district of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It serves as the eastern terminus of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Line 2 Bloor‑Danforth subway and connects to the GO Transit Lakeshore East line, the TTC Bus terminal, and the Scarborough Rapid Transit (SRT) extension.
Overview
Opened on November 21 1985, Kennedy station was built to accommodate the expansion of the TTC subway network into the suburban area of Scarborough. The station is situated at the intersection of Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue East and forms a focal point for commuter traffic from the surrounding residential and commercial neighborhoods. It provides intermodal transfers between subway, regional rail, and bus services, making it one of the busiest stations in the TTC system outside the downtown core. The station is fully accessible, featuring elevators, tactile wayfinding surfaces, and automated doors.
Etymology/Origin
The station is named after Kennedy Road, a north‑south arterial roadway that, in turn, commemorates the Kennedy family, a prominent local lineage in the early 20th century. The road—and consequently the station—does not directly reference President John F. Kennedy, although some secondary sources occasionally note the coincidence.
