Geography
Kemnay is an unincorporated community in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is situated within the Rural Municipality of Dufferin, approximately 30 kilometres west of Winnipeg along Provincial Road 213. The community lies at an elevation of roughly 250 metres (820 ft) above sea level and is part of the Central Plains eco‑region.
Administrative status
As an unincorporated locality, Kemnay does not have its own municipal government; governance and municipal services are provided by the Rural Municipality of Dufferin. The area falls under the federal electoral district of Provencher and the provincial electoral district of Lakeside.
History
The settlement was founded in the early 20th century, concurrent with the expansion of the Canadian National Railway (CNR) line through the region. The community was named after Kemnay, a village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, reflecting the Scottish heritage of several early settlers. A post office operated in Kemnay from 1919 until its closure in 1969. Historical records indicate that the community once served as a modest service centre for surrounding agricultural farms, providing a grain elevator, a general store, and a church.
Economy and demographics
Kemnay is primarily a rural, agriculture‑focused area. The local economy is dominated by grain farming, cattle ranching, and related agri‑businesses. As of the most recent census data (2021), the broader Rural Municipality of Dufferin had a population of approximately 5,000; specific population figures for Kemnay are not separately reported, reflecting its status as a dispersed settlement rather than a population centre.
Transportation
The former CNR rail line that once passed through Kemnay is no longer in regular passenger service; the tracks remain in place for occasional freight movements.
