Kelly Rowland (born Kelendria Trene Rowland on February 11, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. She first gained prominence as a member of the R&B girl group Destiny’s Child, which achieved worldwide commercial success in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Following the group’s hiatus, Rowland pursued a solo career, releasing several albums including Simply Deep (2002), Ms. Freddie (2011), and Talk a Good Game (2013). Her solo singles such as “Dilemma” (featuring Nelly) and “Motivation” (featuring Lil Wayne) earned her multiple chart-topping positions and Grammy nominations.
Early life and education
Rowland was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Houston, Texas. She attended the same high school as Beyoncé Knowles and joined what would become Destiny’s Child in 1994.
Career with Destiny’s Child
The group released three studio albums—Destiny’s Child (1998), The Writing’s on the Wall (1999), and Survivor (2001)—selling over 60 million copies worldwide. The group earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for “Say My Name.”
Solo career
Rowland’s debut solo album, Simply Deep, peaked at number 20 on the US Billboard 200 and featured the hit single “Dilemma,” which won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Subsequent releases have explored R&B, pop, and dance genres, and she has collaborated with artists such as David Guetta, Lil Wayne, and Ne-Yo.
