Keith Weller

Keith Weller (23 October 1958 – 23 February 2004) was an English professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He is noted for his versatility, technical skill, and contributions to several clubs in the English Football League and abroad.

Early life and youth career
Born in Islington, London, Weller began his football education in the youth system of Tottenham Hotspur, although he did not make a first‑team appearance for the club.

Professional career

  • Leicester City (1977–1982) – Weller made his senior debut with Leicester City, where he became a regular starter. Over five seasons he made 164 league appearances and scored 20 goals, helping the club achieve promotion from the Second Division in the 1979–80 season.

  • Seattle Sounders (NASL, loan, 1979) – During the English off‑season, Weller was loaned to the Seattle Sounders of the North American Soccer League, where he made 28 appearances and scored 5 goals.

  • Portsmouth (1982–1985) – Transferred to Portsmouth, Weller continued his midfield role, amassing 115 league caps and 19 goals. He was instrumental in Portsmouth’s promotion to the Second Division in the 1982–83 season.

  • Leicester City (second spell, 1985–1986) – Returning to Leicester, he added 28 league appearances and 3 goals before moving abroad again.

  • Middlesbrough (1986–1988) – Weller contributed 48 league appearances and 5 goals, playing a part in Middlesbrough’s promotion campaign in the 1986–87 season.

  • Cerro Porteño (Paraguay, 1988–1990) – He concluded his playing career with a stint in South America, joining Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño, where he participated in both domestic league matches and continental competitions.

International career
Weller did not receive a senior cap for the England national team, though he represented England at youth levels.

Post‑playing career
Following retirement, Weller worked as a football coach and scout, notably returning to Leicester City in a scouting capacity. He also engaged in community outreach programs promoting youth football.

Personal life and death
Keith Weller was married and had two children. He died on 23 February 2004 in Leicester, England, after a brief illness, at the age of 45. His death was widely mourned by former clubs and supporters, who remembered his technical ability and dedication on the pitch.
