Keith Detelj (born May 20, 1982) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a forward, and is currently a soccer coach. He is recognized for his successful collegiate career, playing professionally in various American leagues, and his extensive coaching career, particularly as head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders in USL League Two.
Early Life and College Career
Born in New York, Detelj developed his soccer skills through youth programs. He began his collegiate career at the University of New Haven before transferring to Dowling College. At Dowling, Detelj became a standout player for the men's soccer team. In 2006, he was instrumental in leading the Golden Lions to an NCAA Division II National Championship title. His performance earned him recognition as an NSCAA/Adidas All-American.Playing Career
Detelj embarked on his professional playing career in 2007, signing with the Carolina RailHawks of the USL First Division, which at the time was the second tier of professional soccer in the United States. He made several appearances for the club during his tenure.Following his time with the RailHawks, Detelj joined the Long Island Rough Riders, competing in the USL Premier Development League (PDL), where he played from 2008 to 2010. During this period, he was a consistent goalscorer and a key offensive player for the team.
In 2011, Detelj returned to the professional second tier, playing for FC New York in the USL Pro league. Throughout his playing career, he was known for his attacking prowess and ability to find the back of the net.
Coaching Career
After concluding his playing career, Detelj transitioned into coaching, primarily establishing himself within the Long Island soccer community. He served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Dowling College.In 2018, Detelj was appointed head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders men's team, competing in USL League Two (the rebranded PDL). Under his leadership, the team has consistently been competitive, securing multiple playoff appearances and contributing to the development of numerous collegiate and aspiring professional players. Beyond the Rough Riders, Detelj has also coached at the high school level, notably at Island Trees High School, and remains actively involved in youth soccer development programs.
