Keith D. Cooper

Keith D. Cooper is an American computer scientist and professor emeritus of computer science at Rice University. He is widely recognized for his contributions to compiler construction, program analysis, and software engineering. Cooper co-authored several influential textbooks, including Engineering a Compiler (first edition 1998, later editions with co‑author Linda Torczon) and Advanced Compiler Design and Implementation (with Timothy J. Rompf). His research has focused on optimizing compilers, data‑flow analysis, and the development of practical tools for software performance improvement.

Education and career

Cooper received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1985. He joined the faculty of Rice University’s Department of Computer Science shortly thereafter, where he taught courses on compilers, programming languages, and software engineering. Over his career, Cooper supervised numerous graduate students and participated in collaborative research projects funded by government agencies and industry partners.

Research contributions

Cooper’s work includes advances in:

  • Data‑flow analysis: Development of efficient algorithms for reaching definitions, live variable analysis, and other classic analyses used in optimizing compilers.
  • Loop optimization: Techniques for automatic parallelization and vectorization of loops, improving execution speed on modern hardware.
  • Compiler infrastructure: Contributions to the design of compiler frameworks that support modular optimization passes and target‑independent code generation.

Publications

Cooper has authored or co‑authored more than 80 peer‑reviewed articles and conference papers. His textbooks have been adopted in undergraduate and graduate compiler courses worldwide and have undergone multiple revisions to incorporate emerging compiler technologies.

Professional service

He has served on program committees for major conferences such as ACM SIGPLAN Symposium on Principles of Programming Languages (POPL) and International Conference on Compiler Construction (CC). Cooper is also a member of the ACM and IEEE Computer Society.

Awards and honors

Cooper’s contributions to computer science education and research have been recognized with teaching awards at Rice University and invitations to deliver keynote lectures at international symposiums on compilers and programming languages.
