The Keio 8000 series is an electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by the Keio Corporation on its commuter rail network in Tokyo, Japan. Introduced in 1992, the series was developed to replace older rolling stock, such as the 5000 series and 6000 series, and to increase capacity on the Keio Line. It was the first train type on the Keio network to utilize variable-voltage/variable-frequency (VVVF) inverter control.
Technical Specifications
The 8000 series features a stainless steel body construction, with the exception of the front end, which is made of steel and painted ivory. The trains are designed for a track gauge of 1,372 mm (4 ft 6 in) and are powered by a 1,500 V DC overhead catenary system.
Manufacturing was handled by Nippon Sharyo and Tokyu Car Corporation (now Japan Transport Engineering Company, or J-TREC). The propulsion system originally employed GTO (Gate Turn-Off) thyristor VVVF inverters, though many units have been retrofitted with more modern IGBT (Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistor) or SiC (Silicon Carbide) inverters during refurbishment programs.
Configuration and Design
The series was produced in two primary configurations:
- 10-car sets: Originally formed by coupling 6-car and 4-car units. In later years, many of these sets were converted into fixed 10-car formations by removing the intermediate driving cabs.
- 8-car sets: Built as fixed 8-car formations for use on shorter platforms or specific service lines.
The exterior livery consists of the Keio corporate colors: magenta and dark blue stripes on a stainless steel background. The interior is arranged with longitudinal bench seating to maximize standing room for commuters. Modernization efforts have introduced features such as LED lighting, liquid crystal display (LCD) passenger information screens, and improved air conditioning units.
Operational History
The Keio 8000 series operates across the majority of the Keio Line system, including the Sagamihara Line and the Takao Line. It is utilized for various service categories, including Local, Rapid, Express, and Limited Express.
Since 2013, the fleet has undergone a large-scale renovation program. These updates include the aforementioned propulsion upgrades, interior refurbishments, and the permanent unification of 6+4 car sets to improve maintenance efficiency and passenger flow. As of the early 2020s, the 8000 series remains a primary component of Keio’s rolling stock, serving alongside the newer 9000 series and 5000 series.
