Kazuo Matsui is a Japanese former professional baseball player who played as an infielder in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and Major League Baseball (MLB).

Overview
Born on October 13 1975 in Higashiyama, Kyoto, Japan, Matsui began his professional career with the Seibu Lions of NPB in 1995. He quickly established himself as a premier shortstop, earning multiple Gold Glove awards and the Pacific League Most Valuable Player award in 2001. In 2004, he became the first Japanese position player to sign with an MLB team in the modern era, joining the New York Mets. Matsui subsequently played for the Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, and returned briefly to the Mets before returning to Japan in 2009. In NPB he continued his career with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, the Hanshin Tigers, and the Saitama Seibu Lions, retiring in 2018. Internationally, Matsui represented Japan in several tournaments, including the 2006 World Baseball Classic.
