Kay Kirkpatrick (born c. 1957) is an American physician and former Republican politician who served in the Georgia State Senate, representing District 32 from 2017 to 2023. A board-certified orthopedic surgeon by profession, she brought her extensive medical background to her legislative work, particularly in healthcare policy.
Early Life and Education Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Kirkpatrick earned her undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University and subsequently her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. She completed her residency in orthopedic surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, becoming one of the few women in her field at the time.
Medical Career Prior to her political career, Dr. Kirkpatrick practiced as an orthopedic surgeon for over 30 years. She specialized in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. She was a partner at Resurgens Orthopaedics, one of the largest orthopedic practices in the United States, and served on its board of directors. Her medical experience informed much of her policy work during her time in the state senate.
Political Career Kirkpatrick first entered politics in a special election in 2017 to fill the vacancy in Senate District 32, a seat previously held by Judson Hill. She successfully won the runoff election and was sworn into office in September 2017. Her district encompassed parts of Cobb and Fulton counties.
During her tenure in the Georgia State Senate, she focused heavily on healthcare policy, leveraging her professional expertise. She served on several key committees, including:
