Kate Nelligan (born Patricia Colleen Nelligan on March 16, 1950) is a Canadian retired actress known for her extensive work in British and American film, television, and theatre.
Born in London, Ontario, Canada, Nelligan trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, England. She began her career in British theatre in the early 1970s, establishing herself as a formidable talent. She performed with the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, earning critical acclaim for her stage work.
Her notable theatre credits include the original London production of David Hare's Plenty, for which she later reprised her role in the 1985 film adaptation. She garnered three Tony Award nominations for her performances on Broadway: Best Actress in a Play for Plenty (1983), Spoils of War (1989), and A Moon for the Misbegotten (1984).
Nelligan transitioned to a successful film career, appearing in a range of international productions. Some of her prominent film roles include Lucy Rose in The Eye of the Needle (1981), Frankie's mother in Frankie and Johnny (1991), and Lila Wingo Newbury in Barbra Streisand's The Prince of Tides (1991).
