Kasturi Srinivasan (1889 – 1966) was an Indian journalist and newspaper proprietor, most noted for his long‑term association with The Hindu, one of India's leading English‑language daily newspapers. He served as the paper’s editor and later as its managing director, playing a central role in shaping its editorial direction during the mid‑20th century.
Early life and education
Born in 1889 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, Srinivasan was a member of the prominent Kasturi family, which owned and operated The Hindu through the publishing house Kasturi & Sons Ltd. He received his education in Madras, graduating with a degree in arts before joining the family business.
Career at The Hindu
Srinivasan entered The Hindu's editorial staff in the early 1910s, initially working as a sub‑editor. He rose through the ranks and was appointed editor in 1933, a position he held until 1950. Under his editorship, the newspaper expanded its coverage of national politics, the independence movement, and international affairs, while maintaining a reputation for balanced reporting and rigorous standards of journalism.
In 1950, Srinivasan transitioned to the role of managing director of Kasturi & Sons Ltd., overseeing the newspaper’s business operations and its expansion into other print media ventures. He remained in this capacity until his retirement in the early 1960s.
Contributions and legacy
Srinavasan is credited with modernising the newsroom, introducing systematic editorial procedures, and fostering a culture of editorial independence. He also played a part in the establishment of the Press Trust of India (PTI) and was involved in various professional journalism associations.
His tenure at The Hindu is frequently cited as a period that reinforced the paper’s stature as a leading voice in Indian public discourse, particularly during the crucial years surrounding India’s independence in 1947.
Personal life and death
Srinivasan married Lakshmi, and the couple had three children. He died in 1966 in Chennai at the age of 77. His descendants continue to be associated with Kasturi & Sons and The Hindu.
