Kariana State was a minor non-salute princely state on the Saurashtra peninsula, in present-day Gujarat, western India.
History
Classified as a Seventh Class princely state under the Gohelwar prant of the Western India States Agency, Kariana State was ruled by Kathi Chieftains. The state comprised the town of Kariana and eight additional villages. According to the 1901 census, it had a combined population of 2,265. The state's revenue in 1903–1904 was approximately 20,000 Rupees, derived mostly from land, and it paid an annual tribute of 1,157 Rupees to the British and to Junagadh State.
Status
Kariana was a non-salute state, meaning its rulers were not entitled to a gun salute as a mark of honor under the British paramountcy system. Like many small princely states in the Kathiawar region, it was part of the complex patchwork of princely jurisdictions that existed in India prior to independence. After India's independence in 1947, the state acceded to the Dominion of India and was eventually merged into the Union of India, becoming part of the state of Gujarat.
