Karen Donfried is an American foreign‑policy expert, academic administrator, and former diplomat who has held senior positions in the U.S. Department of State, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and the National Defense University.
Overview
Born in 1962, Donfried earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Pomona College and a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University. She entered public service in the 1990s, joining the U.S. Department of State where she eventually served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs (2005–2008), overseeing U.S. policy toward Europe, NATO, and related security issues.
From 2014 to 2022, Donfried was the Director of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), a leading American‑European think‑tank dedicated to strengthening transatlantic cooperation. In that role she directed research programs, convened policy dialogues, and managed a portfolio of fellowships and grants.
In March 2022 the U.S. Department of Defense announced her nomination as the 15th President of the National Defense University (NDU). She assumed the position on 18 July 2022, becoming the first woman to lead the institution, which educates senior military and civilian leaders for joint, interagency, and multinational environments. Donfried also serves on the boards of several organizations, including the Atlantic Council and the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
