Karangasem Regency

Definition:
Karangasem Regency is a regency (administrative division) located in the eastern part of Bali Province, Indonesia. It functions as a local government area within the framework of the Republic of Indonesia’s decentralised administrative system.

Overview:
Karangasem Regency is situated on the island of Bali and covers a geographical area that includes coastal lowlands, irrigated rice terraces, and mountainous terrain, with Mount Agung—the highest point in Bali—located partially within its boundaries. The regency plays a significant cultural, historical, and agricultural role in Bali. Its capital is the town of Amlapura. Karangasem has historically been a center of Balinese royalty, with the royal palace of Karangasem (Puri Agung Karangasem) serving as a focal point of local governance and heritage prior to modern administrative structures.

The regency includes several notable locations such as Candidasa, a tourist destination on the east coast; Tirta Gangga, a former royal water palace with fountains and pools fed by natural springs; and Besakih, the "Mother Temple" of Bali, located on the slopes of Mount Agung. Agriculture remains a vital part of the local economy, with rice, vegetables, and fruits cultivated in terraced fields.

Etymology/Origin:
The name "Karangasem" is believed to derive from the Balinese or Old Javanese language. One interpretation suggests it combines "karang" (coral or reef) and "asem" (sour, or tamarind), possibly referring to a coastal location with tamarind trees or a geographic feature resembling a reef. Another theory connects the name to historical figures or titles, though accurate information on the precise etymological origin is not confirmed.

Characteristics:
Karangasem Regency spans approximately 811.5 square kilometers and is divided into eight districts (kecamatan). It has a tropical climate influenced by its topography, with significant rainfall during the wet season. The population is predominantly Balinese Hindu, with traditional customs, temples, and ceremonies deeply integrated into daily life. The regency is known for its traditional arts, irrigation systems (subak), and terraced farming. Economic activities include agriculture, fishing, and tourism, particularly ecotourism and cultural tourism.

The region faces challenges related to natural disasters, including volcanic activity from Mount Agung and periodic droughts, which affect agricultural productivity.
