Karachi Zoo

Definition
Karachi Zoo, officially known as Karachi Zoological Garden, is a public zoological park located in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.

Overview
Established in 1878 during British colonial rule, Karachi Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Pakistan. It is situated near Saddar, a central area of Karachi, and covers an area of approximately 142 acres. The zoo is managed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and aims to house a diverse range of animal species for conservation, education, and public recreation.

The zoo has undergone several phases of development and renovation, including modernization efforts supported by foreign zoos and aid programs, particularly from China and Japan. It hosts a variety of mammals, birds, and reptiles, including native and exotic species such as Asian lions, Bengal tigers, elephants, rhinoceroses, deer, monkeys, and several species of birds and reptiles.

In recent decades, the zoo has faced criticism regarding animal welfare, enclosure conditions, and veterinary care, prompting reforms and upgrades. Conservation and breeding programs have been implemented for certain endangered species.

Etymology/Origin
The name "Karachi Zoo" is derived from its location in the city of Karachi, the capital of Sindh province and the largest city in Pakistan. "Zoo" is a shortened form of "zoological garden," a term commonly used for facilities that display wild animals for public viewing.
