Definition
Kapatid is a Filipino alternative rock supergroup formed in Manila in 2003. The name “Kapatid” translates to “sibling” or “brother/sister” in Tagalog.
Overview
The band emerged as a collaborative project among prominent musicians from several well‑known Philippine rock groups. Its original lineup included vocalist Karl Roy (formerly of Pupil and Advent), bassist Buwi Meneses (Parokya ni Edgar), guitarist Nathan Azarcon (Rivermaya, Bamboo), drummer Paolo Dizon, and keyboardist/producer DJ Dizon. Kapatid released its debut album Edsa 2 in 2004 through Warner Music Philippines, featuring singles such as “Pagbabalik,” “Ulan,” and “Misteryo.” The group was noted for blending hard‑rock riffs with melodic pop sensibilities, reflecting the diverse musical backgrounds of its members.
Following a period of active touring and recording, the band entered an indefinite hiatus after the death of Karl Roy in 2012. While occasional reunion performances have been reported, no new studio material has been released since the early 2000s.
Etymology / Origin
The word “kapatid” derives from the Tagalog language, where it denotes a sibling relationship. The band’s name was chosen to emphasize camaraderie and the sense of brotherhood among its members, many of whom were already acquainted through the Philippine music scene.
