Kane Hames (born 23 June 1981) is a former New Zealand rugby union player who played as a prop. He is best known for his contributions at both provincial and international levels during the 2000s and early 2010s.
Early life and education
Hames was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. He attended Christchurch Boys' High School, where he began playing rugby and later progressed through local age‑grade representative teams.
Provincial career
Hames made his senior debut for Canterbury in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) in 2002. Over multiple seasons, he established himself as a regular member of the Canterbury forward pack, contributing to the side’s successes in domestic competitions.
Super Rugby career
He entered Super Rugby with the Crusaders, debuting in the 2006 season and appearing in several matches over the next two years. Following his stint with the Crusaders, Hames joined the Highlanders, where he continued to play at prop until 2011. Throughout his Super Rugby tenure, he was noted for his scrummaging strength and work rate around the field.
International career
Hames earned his first cap for the New Zealand national team, the All Blacks, on 23 June 2012, playing against Ireland at Hamilton. He was subsequently selected for the All Blacks squad in the 2012 end‑of‑year tour and the 2013 Rugby Championship. In total, he collected 11 test caps between 2012 and 2014, primarily as a reserve loose‑head prop.
Retirement
After the 2015 Super Rugby season, Hames retired from professional rugby, citing persistent injuries that limited his playing time. Post‑retirement, he has been involved in coaching and development roles within New Zealand rugby circles.
