Kamillah Hanks

Kamillah Hanks is an American politician serving as a member of the New York City Council for the 49th District. Elected in November 2021, she represents the North Shore of Staten Island. A member of the Democratic Party, Hanks assumed office in January 2022.

Before entering the City Council, Hanks was known for her work in community development and civic activism. In 2012, she founded the Historic Tappen Park Community Partnership, a non-profit organization aimed at revitalizing the Stapleton area of Staten Island through economic and cultural initiatives. She also served as a member of the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), an oversight agency for the New York City Police Department.

Within the New York City Council, Hanks was appointed as the Chair of the Committee on Public Safety. Her legislative priorities and committee work have focused on issues such as public safety, community-based violence intervention, and economic growth within her district. She succeeded Debi Rose, who reached the term limit for the 49th District seat.
