Geography

Location

Kamigōri is situated in the southwestern part of Hyōgo Prefecture, bordering Okayama Prefecture to its west. The town encompasses areas of varied topography, including fertile plains along rivers and surrounding hills.

Climate

Kamigōri has a Humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), characterized by warm to hot summers and mild to cool winters with occasional snowfall. Rainfall is generally abundant throughout the year, with a slight increase during the summer months.

Demographics

As of March 31, 2022, Kamigōri had an estimated population of 13,833 in 5,837 households, and a population density of 92 persons per km². The total area of the town is 150.28 square kilometres (58.02 sq mi). The town, like many rural areas in Japan, has experienced a gradual decline in population over recent decades.

History

The area that is now Kamigōri was historically part of ancient Harima Province. During the Edo period, much of the territory fell under the jurisdiction of the Akō Domain. The modern town of Kamigōri was established on March 25, 1955, through the merger of the former town of Kamigōri with the villages of Takata, Yasutomi, and the northern part of Ōmachi, all within Akō District.

Government

Kamigōri operates under a mayor-council form of government. The town has a directly elected mayor and a unicameral town council consisting of 14 members. Kamigōri, along with the city of Akō and the town of Sayo, collectively contributes one member to the Hyōgo Prefectural Assembly. In national politics, the town is part of Hyōgo's 12th district for the lower house of the Diet of Japan.

Economy

The economy of Kamigōri is predominantly agricultural, with key crops including rice, various vegetables, and fruits. Some small-scale manufacturing and local businesses also contribute to the town's economy, often related to supporting the agricultural sector or providing local services.

Education

Kamigōri has four public elementary schools and one public junior high school, all operated by the town government. There is also one public high school operated by the Hyōgo Prefectural Board of Education. Additionally, the town hosts one special education school.
