Kambsdalur is a suburb and settlement located on the island of Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands, part of the municipality of Fuglafjørður. It is the youngest settlement in the Faroe Islands, with the first permanent housing established on 5 October 1985.
Geography and Location
Kambsdalur lies in the valley known as Ytri Dalur (also called Ytridalur), situated south of the town of Fuglafjørður. The settlement is named after the mountain Kambur. Its coordinates are approximately 62°14′40″N 6°48′52″W. The area was purchased by the Fuglafjørður municipality in 1981 for housing development, as Fuglafjørður had limited buildable land.
History
Before permanent settlement, the Kambsdalur valley was used by residents of Fuglafjørður for peat cutting, cattle grazing, and sheep farming. The first building in the area was a scout hut (Kambur) built in 1964 by the YMCA/YWCA scouts, which served as a camp facility. A carpentry workshop followed in 1974, and a sports hall was built in 1982 through a municipal collaboration between Leirvík, Gøta, and Fuglafjørður. The first residential settlement began in 1985, and by 2006 the population was recorded at approximately 180. In 2008, the municipality purchased the scout hut to house the municipal leisure school.
Education
Kambsdalur is a significant educational centre in the region. The Faroe Islands Business School (Føroya Handilsskúli) opened a branch in Kambsdalur in 1989. In 1993, the Eysturoy High School and Higher Preparatory Course (Studentaskúlin og HF-skeiðið í Eysturoy) moved into a new building adjacent to the business school. In 2012, these institutions merged to form Miðnám á Kambsdali, which offers six different educational tracks including business, natural sciences, humanities, preparatory courses, and vocational training. As of 2020, approximately 500 students attended the school. The school also hosts FabLab Kambsdalur, the first certified FabLab in the Faroe Islands, established in 2018.
Economy and Industry
Kambsdalur has an industrial area with several businesses, including KJ Hydraulik (hydraulic equipment), JT Electric, Green Marine Divers, and other companies serving the fishing and salmon farming industries. The settlement has a high number of jobs relative to its residential population, with many workers commuting in during the day.
Recreation and Hiking
Kambsdalur is a starting point for several hiking trails. A notable 3.5 km trail leads from Kambsdalur to Skálafjørður, passing by Trælavatn lake at an elevation of 366 metres, with views over Fuglafjørður, the surrounding mountains, and the islands of Kalsoy and Kunoy. Another hiking route connects Kambsdalur to Ánir. The settlement also has a sports hall used for volleyball, badminton, and indoor football, as well as a FIFA-standard football field.
Notable Landmarks
- Trælavatn: A lake located above the settlement.
- Varmakelda: A warm spring south of the settlement, historically believed to have healing properties and visited since before 1350.
- Kambur: The mountain above the settlement on the northern side.
