Kamareddy district

Kamareddy district is an administrative district in the Indian state of Telangana. Established on 17 February 2016 during the reorganisation of districts in the state, it was carved out of the former Nizamabad district. The district is named after its headquarters, the town of Kamareddy.

Geography
The district occupies an area of approximately 2,110 km² (814 sq mi) and lies in the northern part of Telangana. It is bounded by Nizamabad district to the north, Rajanna Sircilla district to the south, Nalgonda district to the southeast, and Sangareddy district to the west. The Godavari River flows along the northern boundary, providing a significant source of irrigation.

Administrative divisions
Kamareddy district is subdivided into three revenue divisions—Kamareddy, Nizamabad Rural, and Yellareddy—further divided into 21 mandals (sub‑districts). The district administration is headed by a District Collector and a Superintendent of Police.

Demographics
According to the 2011 Census of India (the most recent comprehensive census data available), the area that now constitutes Kamareddy district had a population of about 1.3 million. The majority of residents speak Telugu, which is the official language of the state, while Urdu and Lambadi are also spoken by notable minorities. The literacy rate is approximately 64 %, slightly below the state average.

Economy
The district’s economy is predominantly agrarian. Major crops include paddy, cotton, maize, and various pulses. The presence of the Godavari River facilitates extensive canal irrigation, supporting multiple cropping cycles. In recent years, the district has seen growth in horticulture, especially mango and banana cultivation. Small‑scale industries, such as rice milling, textile weaving, and agro‑processing, contribute to local employment.

Infrastructure and transport
Kamareddy town is connected by National Highway 44 (formerly NH‑7), which links the district to Hyderabad in the south and Nizamabad in the north. The district is served by the South Central Railway network, with Kamareddy railway station situated on the Secunderabad–Manmad line, providing passenger and freight services. Road transport is facilitated by state highways and a network of rural roads linking villages to market towns.

Education and health
The district hosts a range of educational institutions, including government primary and secondary schools, junior colleges, and several degree colleges affiliated with nearby universities. Healthcare facilities comprise government hospitals in Kamareddy and Yellareddy, as well as private clinics and nursing homes.

Cultural and historical notes
The region has historical ties to the erstwhile Nizam of Hyderabad and was part of the Hyderabad State before its integration into the Indian Union in 1948. Cultural festivals such as Bathukamma, Bonalu, and Sankranti are widely celebrated. The district also contains several temples, mosques, and shrines reflecting its religious diversity.
