Etymology/Origin
The name “Kaltenkirchen” is derived from the German words kalt (“cold”) and Kirche (“church”). Historical records suggest the name originally referred to a church that was exposed to cold winds on a hilltop; thus the settlement became known as the “cold church.” The earliest documented mention of the place appears in a 1180 deed of the Bishop of Ratzeburg.
