Kalle Nieminen

Kalle Nieminen (born May 30, 1878 in Pihlajavesi, Finland – died October 10, 1943 in Helsinki, Finland) was a Finnish long-distance runner. He was one of the pioneering figures in Finnish athletics during the early 20th century.

Biography

Nieminen was born in Pihlajavesi, then part of the Grand Duchy of Finland under the Russian Empire. He competed for Finland in various international events, most notably the Olympic Games.

Olympic Career

Nieminen represented Finland at the [[1908 Summer Olympics]] in London. He competed in the [[Marathon at the 1908 Summer Olympics|marathon]] event. Despite not winning a medal, his participation marked him as one of the early Finnish Olympic athletes in long-distance running. He completed the marathon in 2:53:09.5, finishing 10th. This was a notable achievement given the challenging conditions and the then-unstandardized nature of marathon running.
